Job Summary

This position provides technical advice and support for radiation protection instrumentation, customer service, troubleshooting, type testing, and collaboration with manufacturers in the development or improvement of instrumentation. The Health Physicist will work with the Radiation Instrument and Calibration Team to maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot radiation protection instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities

Support the testing, evaluating, maintenance, and calibrating processes for fixed and portable alpha, beta, photon, neutron, and tritium radiation protection instrumentation.

Provide support for routine and special operations at the Central Health Physics Calibration Facility for x-ray, gamma, and neutron RP instruments.

Perform special calibrations using a variety of radiation sources along with evaluation of existing and proposed instrumentation.

Participate in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new methods to improve radiation protection practices with regards to radiation protection instrumentation.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, or related field.

5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of health physics concepts and practices, including the use and physics of radiation detection.

Familiarity with 10CFR835 and ANSI guidelines regarding radiation monitoring instrumentation.

Ability to exercise the objectives and considerable latitude in determining the course of their projects by determining the objectives and approaches needed to successfully complete assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and experience in the calibration, testing, selection, and use of radiation monitoring instruments.

Experience with analog and digital electronic troubleshooting and repair at the component level.

Ability to develop and test the performance of newly developed radiation detection instrumentation.

Experience with the handling and use of radioactive sources (sealed, electroplated, and thin-window).

Demonstrated ability to develop, modify, and implement/ follow technical procedures.

Demonstrated oral and written communications skills.

Experience with personal computers.

Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, quality, and customer service.

Experience in using the Los Alamos Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) radiation transport code.

Knowledge of ANSI environmental testing programs for radiation monitoring instruments
