This position acts as a vital link for the Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners working in the Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (CMHH HCICU).


The Children's Heart Institute (CHI) is eager to welcome a committed professional to our Pediatric and Congenital Heart team.

Position Overview:


This role involves coordinating NP and/or PA services in both clinical and administrative capacities within the Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (HICU).

Responsibilities include managing staffing and orientation for assigned team members, conducting ongoing education and training, and upholding infection control and safety standards while promoting patient-centered communication and care. The schedule will consist of a varied rotation of shifts covering weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute complex, standardized patient care procedures requiring specialized training, typically performed by a physician, without constituting the practice of medicine.
  • Conduct independent and physician-supervised rounds in the Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (HICU).
  • Perform relevant patient evaluations and assessments, providing appropriate treatments, including monitoring and prescribing medications.
  • Coordinate, direct, and implement the patient's care plan.
  • Order necessary laboratory, diagnostic, and radiographic tests, interpreting results as needed.
  • Monitor patient treatment programs, informing the attending physician of critical medical information.
  • Document all patient interactions, recording observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner in the patient's medical record.
  • Coordinate volunteer faculty, develop departmental event calendars, and participate in committees aimed at enhancing patient care quality and preparing for accreditation.
  • Oversee administrative functions for Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants, including continuing education activities such as in-services and seminar series.
  • Facilitate annual performance evaluations in collaboration with supervising physicians, ensuring compliance with all licensure and credentialing requirements for assigned APPs.
  • Represent APPs in assigned areas of responsibility on various committees and meetings.
  • Engage in hospital committees and task forces that represent patient or community interests, planning and implementing systems to meet regulatory Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
  • Complete all record-keeping and report submissions required by regulatory bodies and committees.
  • Develop systems to fulfill Continuous Quality Improvement requirements.
  • Respond to emergency situations as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Possess or be eligible for a DEA license.

Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Current Texas Licensure as an APRN-NP OR

Current Texas Licensure and Certification as a Physician Assistant.


Current specialty certification as required by the department, excluding FNP certification unless paired with a post-master's certification in specialty.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or specialty certification as required by the department.


Education Requirements:


Master's degree in Nursing as NP or a Master's degree in Nursing with completion of a post-master Nurse Practitioner Certification Program OR a Master's degree as PA.


Experience Requirements:
Minimum of four years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Physical Demands:


Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

This position may involve responsibilities that are security sensitive and subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
