Position Overview

The University of Washington is seeking a dedicated Senior Academic Advisor to enhance the academic journey of our students within the College of Engineering. This role is pivotal in shaping the educational experiences of approximately 1,000 first-year undergraduate Engineering Undeclared students.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Advising (65%)

  • Deliver personalized developmental advising to a caseload of around 350 Engineering Undeclared students, helping them connect their strengths, interests, and values with the university curriculum.
  • Provide resources to assist students in overcoming academic challenges and finding purpose in their educational pursuits.
  • Guide students in securing internships, research opportunities, and relevant extracurricular activities.
  • Assist students in integrating their educational and career aspirations.
  • Offer tools and resources to cultivate transferable life skills.
  • Help students navigate the complexities of college requirements and institutional processes.
  • Conduct regular Quick Question advising sessions to address student inquiries.
  • Engage in outreach to students facing academic challenges, providing support and resources.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to deliver comprehensive advising services.

Programmatic and Administrative Duties (30%)

  • Act as a liaison to the Engineering Living Learning Community.
  • Facilitate training for resident advisors.
  • Participate in regular meetings with campus stakeholders.
  • Coordinate events and activities for Engineering Undeclared students.
  • Oversee the annual review of the LLC memorandum of understanding.
  • Support the placement process for Engineering Undeclared students into engineering majors.
  • Assist in organizing major college programs and workshops.
  • Contribute to the development of engineering major sample four-year plans.

Team Support (5%)

  • Provide assistance to the Engineering First-Year Interest Group program as needed.
  • Support front desk operations and manage inquiries effectively.
  • Collaborate with IT and web development teams for necessary updates.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Three years of experience in academic advising, student counseling, or teaching.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to engage with students from diverse backgrounds empathetically and professionally.
  • Commitment to educational equity and access.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proven organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evening and weekend events.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with engineering or STEM fields.
  • Experience with Microsoft and Google workspace platforms.
  • Proven track record in organizing and executing events.
