Job Summary:

The Surgical Services Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of designated units within the Surgical Services division. This role involves managing inpatient units at Kaiser Permanente facilities or Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). The area of specialization will be provided through the job posting process, and this job description will cover all areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Acts as an expert resource and role model for staff, creating and evaluating policies and procedures based on clinical practice guidelines.
  • Ensures care delivery meets guidelines through competency-based assessment of staff at hire and ongoing.
  • Uses quality outcomes to ensure safe procedural care of patients in the perioperative/interventional arena.
  • Supports ongoing education and professional growth of self and staff, staying current with practice changes and communicating to staff.
Leadership and Collaboration:
  • Facilitates interdepartmental relationships to support the mission, vision, and goals of the department and organization.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication, even in conflict and difficult conversations.
  • Creates and maintains a culture of creative thinking, problem-solving, and change management.
Quality Assurance and Improvement:
  • Participates in data gathering and analysis, articulating organization and department performance improvement programs and goals.
  • Maintains compliance with regulatory bodies and professional standards, monitoring quality and safety of units.
  • Supports quality plans and articulates to staff, developing department plans with a quality focus that responds to changing healthcare delivery.
Financial Management:
  • Works with the business manager or director to develop a budget that takes into account labor and cost of goods using historical and projected estimates.
  • Manages labor and inventory and supplies in a cost-effective manner and within budget, defining budget variances and course-correcting as needed.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Cooperative, efficient work environment as a result of consistent interpretation and application of contractual guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum five (5) years of RN clinical experience, with at least two (2) years in Perioperative Services.
  • Minimum two (2) years of leadership role in the healthcare field.
  • BSN or health-related bachelor's degree or currently enrolled in a BSN or health-related bachelor's degree program with a completed date defined.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years of Critical Care experience (MPU or SPA/PACU only).
  • Minimum four (4) years of previous management experience in a similar role or in an acute care setting.
  • Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated knowledge in the area of clinical experience.
  • Certification in specialization (CNOR, CPAN, etc.).
