Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant: Cardiac Surgery ICU

We are seeking a highly skilled Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Cardiac Surgery ICU team at the University of Maryland Medical Center. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will provide exceptional patient care, collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals, and contribute to the development of clinical pathways and quality improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities- Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive history and physical assessments for patients admitted to the Cardiac Surgery ICU.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, establish medical diagnoses, and design treatment plans.
- Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans.
- Perform invasive procedures and provide moderate sedation as needed.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams to ensure seamless care coordination.
- Provide educational programs for healthcare team members and participate in mentoring activities.
- Precept students and promote understanding of disease processes in the area of specialty.
- Function as a clinical resource for team members and provide community education and health promotion.
- Coordinate adequate nurse practitioner coverage on the service and work with physicians and nurse practitioners to ensure this coverage.
- Participate in performance improvement activities aimed at improving clinical outcomes and minimizing variation.
- Develop clinical pathways and participate in quality assurance activities.
- Master of Science Degree with completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
- Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland.
- CPR required.
- ACLS/BCLS as required for inpatient work.
- A minimum of one (1) year experience as a Registered Nurse is required.
- Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty.
Working Conditions
- Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call and overtime may be required.
- There is potential for regular exposure to patients possessing infectious diseases in the work environment; requires observance of "Universal Precautions" by wearing gloves, goggles, and mask, is required.

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
- Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
- Implements policies, procedure, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
- Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members.
- Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
