Overview
The Financial Counselor I is responsible for executing administrative tasks within the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury (ICSCI). This role emphasizes maintaining exceptional standards of customer service. Job functions and activities are regularly assessed for compliance with quality and competency benchmarks.

Key Responsibilities
- Verifies, analyzes, interprets, and documents patient health insurance coverage, health plan provisions, or other third-party payment arrangements for outpatient and day treatment admissions at ICSCI.
- Conducts interviews, either in-person or via phone, with patient representatives to gather precise information regarding financial status and service costs.
- Completes necessary online system entries and physical documentation as required.
- Secures authorization for outpatient and day treatment programs.
- Facilitates correspondence regarding medical necessity with insurance providers and other third-party payers.

- Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the essential business requirements of the designated clinic, acting as a liaison between the clinic, the Care Center, the Care Management Office (CMO), the Finance department, and clients.
- Coordinates financial clearance for newly scheduled appointments in collaboration with Care Center(s).
- Evaluates and pursues funding sources and alternative payment options, ensuring thorough follow-up until all avenues are explored or secured.

- Monitors insurance benefit limits (concurrent review) and facilitates the acquisition of additional authorizations as directed by the Clinical Care Team.
- Estimates deposit requirements, assesses patient liability, establishes payment plans, and coordinates payment arrangement details with Patient Accounting.

- Prepares cost estimates for services for families and agencies; negotiates rates for outpatient and Day Programs as feasible, based on insurance type and coverage.

- Assists in tracking various departmental reports, including Delinquency Reports, Medical Assistance Clearance Reports, bad debt reports, Medicare, and other insurance data tracking.
- Communicates solutions and insights to leadership.

Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- A BA/BS in a human services-related field or healthcare administration is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of two years' experience in healthcare, specifically related to admissions and patient accounting, is required.
