About the Role

We are seeking a skilled HVAC Engineer Assistant to join our team at the City of Rochester, New York. As an HVAC Engineer Assistant, you will play a critical role in maintaining and repairing a wide range of heating, refrigerating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems in our city buildings and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and perform general repairs to HVAC equipment, including heating, refrigerating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
  • Perform all required preventive maintenance, including lubrication, changing belts and filters, etc.
  • Identify equipment problems and perform necessary service.
  • Report to supervisor all equipment or system problems that are beyond the repair capabilities of the employee.
  • Respond to maintenance work requests and tenant complaints.
  • Assist HVAC Engineers in the servicing and installation of HVAC and associated equipment.
  • Identify, suggest, and implement energy conservation measures as directed.
  • Test and treat water used in HVAC systems to prevent growth of fungi and bacteria.
  • Test and treat swimming pool water for clarity and maintain a log sheet of activities to be submitted to the Health Department.
  • Operate, maintain, and monitor a building automation system.
  • Keep operating logs for all HVAC equipment under employee's charge.
  • Monitor and maintain emergency generators by performing weekly checks to assure operational integrity.
  • Drive city vehicle to work locations.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or Equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience with high pressure steam and/or refrigeration equipment, one (1) year of which must involve operating the equipment, and one (1) year of which must involve installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Possession of either a City of Rochester R-4 Refrigeration Engineer's License OR City of Rochester Third Class Stationary Engineer's License within 18 months of appointment.
  • Possession of an EPA Recovery Universal Certificate at time of application.
  • Valid NYS Class D operator's license at time of appointment. Licensure must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
