Recreational Therapy Specialist

OBJECTIVE:
Design, oversee, and execute recreational therapy initiatives as an integral part of the patient's rehabilitation strategy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations through patient observation and discussions with patients and their families to gather insights on the patient's preferences, capabilities, and challenges for the formulation and execution of the therapeutic plan.
- Organize, lead, and implement engaging activities within the therapeutic framework to promote patient advancement towards their recovery objectives.
- Develop and execute a diverse range of recreational programs, including but not limited to therapeutic leisure activities, leisure education, and awareness initiatives.
- Facilitate and guide activity sessions aimed at enhancing the mental and physical health of patients.
- Teach patients various activities and techniques, such as sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation methods tailored to their individual requirements.
- Create and implement therapeutic plans and interventions that align with patient interests and support them in achieving their recovery goals.
- Encourage patient participation in therapeutic activities, including exercise, games, and community engagement.
- Assist patients in acquiring essential social skills necessary for maintaining independence.
- Adapt activities to meet the unique needs of different groups.
- Exhibit a positive, compassionate, and professional demeanor towards all clients. Address and resolve any unmet patient needs promptly, prioritizing patient safety at all times.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Perform other responsibilities and tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or a related discipline is required.
- A Master's degree is preferred.
- A minimum of three years of experience in recreational therapy within a healthcare environment, with an understanding of the patient demographics served by the organization, is required.
- Prior experience in a healthcare recreational setting is preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or in the process of obtaining national certification; OR certification in a specific area of expertise (Art, Dance, Music, etc.) OR clinical licensure (LCPC, LPC, etc.) with certification in expressive therapy is required.
- CPR and de-escalation and restraint certification are required (training provided upon hire).
- First aid certification may be necessary based on state or organizational requirements.
