Job Summary

Rutgers University is seeking a Health Safety Specialist III to join our team in the Department of Environmental Health & Safety. This role is responsible for performing work in the programs of hazardous chemicals and radioactive waste management, laboratory safety, DOT shipments, and hazardous material spill response and clean-up.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a physical, chemical, or life science, or equivalent combination of education and experience, and at least two years of related experience. They will also have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement within six months of employment.

The ideal candidate will have excellent computer, interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills, as well as the ability to work in a variety of working conditions, including heights, confined or restricted spaces, temperature extremes, and outdoors. They will also be able to lift up to 50 pounds and wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspects and assesses health/safety hazards
  • Communicates University policy and procedures
  • Responds to emergencies and requests for assessments and investigations
  • Oversees all activities or services affecting health/safety in the geographical area of responsibility
  • Brings to the attention of the manager, circumstances that could develop into widespread internal or external health/safety issues

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a physical, chemical, or life science, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least two years of related experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement within six months of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent time management skills to routinely deal with multiple issues and activities
  • Active membership and participation in an EH&S professional society
  • Knowledge, use, and limitation of various sampling equipment

Equipment Utilized:

  • Must be able to use and understand applications and limitations of various sampling equipment
  • Must also be proficient in MS Word, MS Access, Excel, and Outlook

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Must be able to wear and use respiratory protection and other PPE
  • Must be able to work in a variety of working conditions, including heights, confined or restricted spaces, temperature extremes, and outdoors
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
