The Police Chief is an at-will position appointed by and operating under the general supervision of the City Manager. As a member of the Executive Team, the Chief will strategize, direct, manage, and oversee the activities and operations of the Police Services Department. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and seasoned law enforcement professional with a strong leadership presence and a proven history of implementing successful policing initiatives. This individual will collaborate with key stakeholders to realize an ambitious and vibrant vision for the Police Services Department. As part of the City's Executive Team, the Police Chief will work closely with the City Manager, elected officials, department heads, and the highly educated and engaged community. The Chief will be a dedicated public servant who embraces the mission of delivering the highest quality law enforcement services to the community.

About the Position

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical pathway to obtain the necessary knowledge and abilities would include: A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including four years in senior management and administrative roles. Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in criminal justice, business administration, police science, or a related field. Graduation from the FBI National Academy and/or a command college is desirable. A master's degree in one of these areas is also preferred. Possession of a valid California POST Management certificate and a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required.

Preferred Skills

Graduation from the FBI National Academy, command college, and a master's degree in a related field.

Compensation and Benefits

The City of Coronado offers a competitive compensation package. Salary is open based on qualifications and experience. The current salary range for the Police Chief is competitive, with an excellent benefits package including CalPERS retirement.
