Position Overview

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York is on the lookout for a skilled Senior Accountant to join our dedicated team. Essential Qualifications

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is mandatory.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years in accounting, non-profit financial oversight, or a similar area is required.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
  • A comprehensive understanding of non-profit accounting practices and financial management principles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Over five years of experience in accounting or non-profit financial management.
  • Proven expertise in grants accounting, particularly for government-funded programs.
  • Experience in supervising staff.
  • Familiarity with Federal Single Audits and other grant-related audits.

  • Exceptional organizational abilities, capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively address the needs of grantors, grantees, clients, and the organization.
  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
Core Responsibilities
  • Facilitate daily operations within the Fiscal Department by preparing billing vouchers and invoices for assigned grants.
  • Maintain awareness of funder regulations for grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with budgets and policies.
  • Assist in generating all necessary fiscal reports for grant-funded initiatives, ensuring timely submissions.
  • Conduct budget-to-actual analyses for grant-funded programs, communicating status and variances to program management.
  • Support the Director of Finance in preparing grant and contract budgets and amendments.
  • Contribute to the preparation of monthly financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Help maintain the general ledger and subsidiary accounts, including journal entries.
  • Participate in month-end closing and account reconciliation activities.
  • Identify and report any accounting discrepancies to the Director of Finance.
  • Assist with special projects, including year-end financial book closures.
  • Support external auditors by providing necessary statements and information for audits.
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Propose updates to accounting processes and procedures as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Finance in various tasks as required.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Work Environment

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position is commensurate with experience, ranging from $70,000 to $80,000. Additional benefits include generous time off, medical/dental/vision coverage, retirement contributions, tuition reimbursement, and flexible work schedule options.
