The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) plays a vital role in the healthcare team by evaluating specimens, performing accurate testing, and reporting results in a timely manner. This position requires a strong understanding of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate specimens for acceptability and perform accurate testing according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
- Verify accuracy of results before reporting and report test results in a timely manner.
- Perform maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment as needed, and troubleshoot problems when they arise.
- Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control/plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Perform phlebotomy procedures as needed, demonstrating a willingness to work with patients and colleagues to ensure accurate and efficient testing.
- Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related scientific discipline.
- Registered as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) within 1 year of job start.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting, with a strong understanding of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments.
This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, with frequent requirements to move about the office and facility. The work involves exerting a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The work also involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities, subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum, and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease.
Physical and Mental DemandsThis position requires the ability to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels, with or without correction, and to make fine discriminations in sound. The work requires close visual and acuity, with the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus. The position also requires the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain collaborative and respectful working relationships throughout the organization.
