Key Responsibilities- Provide basic nursing care to assigned patients/clients in stable conditions and in predictable situations.
- Assign, supervise, and direct the work performed by paraprofessionals and Licensed Practical Nurses of a lower level.
- Implement the assigned aspects of the patient teaching and discharge plan.
- Intervene appropriately and respond to deteriorating conditions of patients.
- Provide sick call services to inmates housed in correctional facilities.
- Provide emergency nursing care to inmates seeking access to medical treatment during non-sick call hours in correctional facilities.
- Process admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Conduct and document data base to include psychosocial and physical screening of patients and/or family.
- Assist in developing nursing plan of care.
- Prepare monthly nursing reports, charts, and other medical records.
- Review accident and seizure reports.
- Provide individual health counseling concerning diet, prenatal care, family planning, VD, and TB control under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Document activities in service records.
- Assess patient immunization status and administer appropriate immunizations.
- Perform laboratory procedures such as hemoglobin, lead screening, electrophoresis, urinalysis, hearing, vision, and measurements.
- Apply and change dressings as assigned.
- Use medical equipment, i.e., intermittent suction and continuous suction machine.
- Maintain routine enteral feedings.
- May act as co-therapist in a group setting.
- May instruct staff in basic nursing techniques.
- May orient and train Licensed Practical Nurses of a lower level.
- May schedule appointments for dental, eye, speech, language, and hearing care.
- Possession of a valid Louisiana license or temporary permit to practice practical nursing or a multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state.
- Two years of practical nursing experience.
