Job Summary

The University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry is seeking a highly skilled Social Work Specialist I to provide expert practice skills in adult psychiatry assessment, psychotherapy, group therapy, and consultations. This role will also involve program development, supervision, teaching, research, administration, and public education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct mental health assessments of adult patients in an outpatient clinic and crisis stabilization unit.
  • Formulate diagnostic opinions and treatment plans using DSM 5 criteria.
  • Provide individual, family, and group psychotherapy services to patients with complex mental health needs.
  • Assess risk for self-harm and harm to others.
  • Develop and implement therapeutic interventions, including behavior modification, cognitive behavioral therapy, and interpersonal modalities of treatment.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to implement patient care recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with standards regarding attendance, documentation, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Stay current with social work and healthcare knowledge and pursue further enhancements of job-related knowledge.
  • Contribute to program development, teaching, and research services.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Social Work.
  • Iowa licensure as an Independent Social Worker (LISW) by time of hire.
  • Certification by the Academy of Certified Social Workers is desirable.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of social work experience in adult outpatient behavioral health care settings, including experience providing psychotherapy services.
  • Demonstrated experience with evidence-based practices, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of multidisciplinary care teams and effect change and resolve recalcitrant problems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience providing evidence-based treatment for adults and families.
  • Experience providing planned and emergent assessments of patients in adult inpatient and outpatient clinic settings.
  • Experience formulating diagnostic opinions and treatment plans using DSM 5 criteria.
  • Experience providing individual, family, and group psychotherapy services.
  • Advanced graduate education and/or continuing education related to advanced behavioral health practice.
  • Ability to provide a wide range of therapeutic interventions.
  • Expertise in Iowa abuse/neglect law.
