Oversee materials utilized in automotive chassis systems. Possess in-depth knowledge of various materials employed in automotive chassis components, including metals, resins, elastomers, corrosion-resistant coatings, and automotive fluids. Understand the compatibility of these materials concerning secondary operations such as rubber bonding and electroplating. Additionally, the materials engineer collaborates with vehicle teams and core engineering to address material compatibility, warranty, production, and processing challenges that arise throughout the lifecycle of a part or subsystem.
Self-motivation, along with exceptional organizational and communication skills, is essential for this role. The ability to work collaboratively across multiple disciplines (Engineering, Research, Laboratory, and Design) is crucial. Assist in resolving assembly, manufacturing, durability, and field issues while identifying and recommending subsequent steps. Act as a liaison between the laboratory, engineering, and manufacturing teams.
Key Responsibilities:

· Develop and maintain foundational documents for materials engineering, ensuring updates to prevent issue recurrence:
· Material and Performance Specifications, Approved Source List (ASL), and Ford Laboratory Test Methods (FLTMs)
· Material FEDE requirements and Design Rules
· Material property data maintained in the Material Center Database
· Describe the operational environment in which components/systems function.
· Explain the compatibility of fundamental materials within the Ford manufacturing and processing ecosystem, including Tier 1 suppliers.
· Review and approve engineering drawings and Bill of Materials (BOMs) in Teamcenter (TCe).
· Review and endorse Design Verification/Product Validation (DV/PV) plans and part performance test reports.
· Provide root cause analysis, materials, and process expertise to support the resolution of manufacturing and field issues, collaborating with Engineering, Supplier Technical Assistance (STA), Program Vehicle Team (PVT), Purchasing, and Research.
· Support manufacturing site evaluations, process development, and issue resolution.
· Collaborate with core engineering functions to develop/update testing methods for enhanced field correlation and to prevent recurrence.
· Assist in initiatives aimed at reducing material costs.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
· Bachelor of Science in Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Chemical Engineering with a focus on metals
· Relevant internships and/or cooperative assignments in laboratory failure analysis, and/or production or research of metals, resins, or elastomers
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
· Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
· Demonstrated leadership abilities, self-motivated, and driven
Preferred Qualifications:
· 1-2 years of experience in the automotive or raw materials production sectors
· Familiarity with automotive testing methods and good laboratory practices

Attendance Requirements:
· Regular attendance is critical, with flexibility for testing schedules into other shifts and/or weekends.
