POSITION SUMMARY:

The Process Engineering Department Head will provide strategic leadership and decision-making for the process engineering division across various sectors, including Renewables, Traditional Energy, and D&I. This role involves organizing and directing the Process Engineering team to support both new initiatives and ongoing operations. The Department Head will oversee multiple direct reports and play a key role in mentoring junior process engineers. Additionally, this position will engage in the development of process design packages for new projects and products, as well as offer process guidance during project commissioning and start-up phases.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Possess extensive process knowledge in the energy and renewable energy sectors.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standard practices.
  • Lead the creation and review of all process engineering documentation and decisions.
  • Prioritize and allocate process engineering tasks effectively.
  • Provide senior-level chemical engineering and process guidance for the department and all projects.
  • Experience in selecting and procuring chemical and process instrumentation.
  • Drive innovative process improvements to enhance project efficiencies.
  • Oversee and direct process simulations.
  • Review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Material Balances.
  • Evaluate P&IDs and understand controls narratives, control schemes, and necessary instruments.
  • Select appropriate materials for process equipment, mechanical systems, and piping.
  • Assess equipment specifications and designs, providing technical evaluations.
  • Participate in HAZOPs, managing the process engineering aspects.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant safety and industry codes and standards, such as NFPA, API, and ASME.
  • Collaborate with clients on permitting requirements.
  • Define project emissions requirements and control technologies.
  • Organize and develop the process engineering team to support start-up and commissioning activities.
  • Gain insights into animal operations, water management, and process operations.
  • Work with Operations to troubleshoot issues and identify root causes.
  • Implement Management of Change protocols.
  • Collaborate with the Process Engineering team to develop tools for monitoring existing facility operations, track key metrics, and optimize performance while reducing energy consumption.
  • Work with the Environmental Product Services team to maximize credit generation through process engineering resources.
  • Prepare process information for client proposals.
  • Collaborate with the estimating department to create and execute project estimations.
  • Coordinate with project management to develop staffing schedules for assignments.
  • Travel domestically and internationally, approximately 20-30% of the time.
  • Conduct all activities in a safe and healthy manner, adhering to established safety and company protocols.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position involves work in both office settings and uncontrolled environments. Employees may encounter harsh conditions for brief periods, including dust, fumes, chemicals, hazardous materials, noise, and varying weather conditions. Travel to job sites, both domestically and internationally, is required, and living accommodations in some foreign assignments may not meet U.S. standards. All employees must adhere to safety standards and utilize personal protective equipment in designated areas.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands outlined here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. While executing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, use hands and fingers, grip, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; and maintain a consistent state of alertness while working safely. The ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. regularly is required.

SKILL/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Professional Engineering registration is preferred.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in process engineering within the industry is required.
  • Previous experience in a team leadership or management role is essential.
  • Interest in mentoring junior engineers is highly valued.
  • Advanced process simulation experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of PFDs and P&IDs is necessary.
  • Mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience are preferred.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and start-up activities is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities are essential.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and a comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows-based programs are required.
  • Flexibility in working hours, including potential weekend work, may be necessary.
  • Effective time management skills, personal conduct, and change management abilities are crucial.
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers, clients, vendors, and other business contacts.
