Overview:

The Medical/Practice Assistant (MA/PA) plays a vital role within the healthcare team, responsible for delivering patient care as directed by a licensed independent provider (LIP: MD, NP, PA), a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or a Registered Nurse (RN). The MA/PA engages in both direct and indirect patient care, health maintenance, patient education, collaborative planning, and rehabilitation, all within their scope of practice and aligned with their training and qualifications. The Medical/Practice Assistant may have access to secure medication storage areas and incidental access to medications. Building relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, the MA functions as a collaborative team member, ensuring quality patient care and contributing to the achievement of significant goals for the patient, the practice, and the organization. Additionally, the MA/PA will provide administrative support to the practice, managing multiple functions to facilitate a seamless patient experience.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Exhibits genuine engagement and enthusiasm in addressing the care delivery needs of patients and their families.
  • Fosters an inclusive atmosphere that supports patient and family-centered care for a diverse community.
  • Accepts patient care assignments within their training and current standards of practice. Collaborates with a Licensed Independent Provider (LIP), LPN, or RN to gather data that aids in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care.
  • Works as part of the healthcare team, contributing to a supportive and therapeutic environment that promotes the achievement of specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and timely patient goals.
  • Accurately measures vital signs, gathers information regarding the patient's health status, administers relevant care within their scope of practice as directed by the LIP/LPN/RN, and documents appropriately in the electronic health record.
  • Conducts routine tests, which may include electrocardiograms, vision and hearing screenings, and specimen collection for laboratory testing.
  • Engages in team-based care and patient education initiatives to promote the health and wellness of patients in collaboration with the LIP/LPN/RN, reinforcing patient instructions as directed.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and compliance readiness at both organizational and unit levels.
  • Assists in telephone screening of patients and may provide instructions when directed by the LIP/LPN/RN.
  • Involves in prescription management tasks, including pending new prescriptions and renewals requiring LIP approval, prior authorizations, and medication reconciliation.
  • Following established clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and workflows, sends appropriate orders for radiology, laboratory testing, and other care needs requiring LIP authorization.
  • Performs various tasks that may be facilitated by administrative staff, impacting the overall operations of the unit, including room stocking, scheduling tasks, and other assigned duties.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Manage and transfer telephone calls.
  • Schedule and register patients for appointments/procedures, confirm appointments/procedures, and prepare for patient visits by providing necessary information and completing required tasks.
  • Greet patients upon arrival, verify and obtain necessary information, and ensure completion of forms.
  • Ensure all billing and fiscal information is completed and submitted post-visit, including collection and daily reconciliation of co-payments.
  • Assist with special projects as directed.
  • Support training and orientation of staff as needed.
  • Adhere to HIPAA guidelines for managing patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Efficiently utilize organizational resources, including time, supplies, equipment, and other assets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Certificate Program preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

  • Ability to support the practice telephonically by answering and screening calls.

  • Ability to manage work processes systematically and prioritize tasks effectively.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing technology in the clinical setting, including basic computer skills and electronic medical equipment.
