We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Detention Officer to join our team at New Hanover County (NC). As a Detention Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of our detention facility, ensuring the well-being of inmates, and upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
Key Responsibilities- Processing Inmates: Complete paperwork, conduct searches, and secure personal property for incoming inmates.
- Maintaining Order: Patrol jail areas to prevent escape and maintain a safe environment for inmates and staff.
- Inspecting Cells: Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of cells, confiscate contraband, and maintain a secure environment.
- Transporting Inmates: Escort inmates to and from court, hospitals, and other destinations as needed.
- Preparing Records: Maintain accurate records and reports on inmate activities, including visitations, meals, and medical assistance.
- Responding to Emergencies: Respond to medical emergencies, fires, and other incidents that may arise within the facility.
- Education: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- Age: Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States
- License: Valid NC Driver's License
- Certifications: Certification as a detention officer within time lines set by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission
- CPR Certification: Must obtain CPR certification within one (1) year of employment
Detention Officers work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, often under stressful conditions. They must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and during emergency situations. The ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations is essential.
