Job Description:

As a Medical Technician III at the Department of State Health Services, you will play a vital role in providing patient care and support in a 75-bed inpatient hospital setting. This journey-level position involves monitoring patient conditions, assisting medical staff with therapeutic programs, and working under general supervision with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient-Centric Care: Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families. Maintain clear and respectful communication with patients and their caregivers, tailoring care activities to suit the specific age and needs of each patient.
  • Vital Signs: Take patients' vital signs and accurately record the results, collecting and transporting lab specimens as necessary. Utilize glucometers to measure and monitor blood glucose levels for diabetic patients, responding to patient call lights promptly and making regular patient rounds.
  • Rehabilitation Assistance: Prepare and organize materials and equipment required for therapeutic activities, operating therapeutic equipment as needed and providing guidance during rehabilitative therapies. Collaborate with patients to support and encourage their participation in rehabilitative exercises.
  • Support to Medical and Other Staff: Assist medical providers during patient examinations and procedures, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for patients.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Thoroughly clean and sanitize patient care equipment, including IV pumps, wheelchairs, and bedside commodes, facilitating patient transportation to different departments and ensuring a safe and clean environment.
  • Efficient Resource Utilization: Follow efficient supply usage practices to minimize waste, ensuring proper handling, storage, and distribution of medical supplies and equipment, and disposing of medical waste according to established guidelines.
  • Infection Control and Safety Measures: Emphasize respiratory precautions and unit rules during patient education sessions, strictly adhering to infection control policies to create a safe healthcare environment, maintaining hand hygiene, and following proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
  • Patient Engagement and Recreational Activities: Engage with patients in diversional activities, both indoors and outdoors, actively encouraging patient participation in recreational pursuits and accompanying patients on field trips outside the facility.
  • Transportation of Patients: Safely transport patients to and from medical appointments, tests, and procedures within the healthcare facility, ensuring their comfort and security during transit, and adjusting work schedules to carry out long-distance driving, which may require traveling throughout the state to transport patients.
Requirements:
  • Texas Nurse's Aide Certificate or ability to obtain within 5 months of hire date.
  • Valid Texas driver's license or obtain it within 90 days of hire date.
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Nurse Aide (CNA) required.
  • Experience in healthcare or patient care work, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Preferred experience in the operation of motor vehicles on a commercial basis.
  • Current CPR certification.
