Position Overview:
The Observability (OBS) team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer who excels at the convergence of infrastructure and software engineering. This team is responsible for a comprehensive suite of tools that empower engineers to gain insights into their creations, primarily leveraging open-source solutions at scale. We actively utilize and contribute to tools such as Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana, Vector, and others.
Monitoring Responsibilities:
Our monitoring infrastructure processes billions of data points every minute, making it one of the largest deployments globally of Prometheus, Thanos, and Grafana. This scale presents unique challenges, including performance optimization for distributed query systems and innovative feature development to enhance user experience.
Additionally, we manage a hybrid logging system that combines open-source tools (like Vector) with SaaS solutions for backend search capabilities. The team is dedicated to rolling out new features and ensuring more reliable and scalable logging solutions in the future.
We are also in the process of launching a tracing product for internal use at Reddit, utilizing OTEL, Clickhouse, and Grafana. Ongoing efforts will focus on scaling this platform and integrating new functionalities.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a team of software engineers to develop and maintain the foundational platform for Reddit's infrastructure.
- Deliver software enhancements to boost the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of observability components.
- Provide input on the technical and strategic direction of event-driven architecture at Reddit.
- Automate essential aspects of the event-driven development lifecycle.
- Participate in shared on-call duties.
- Contribute improvements to the open-source projects utilized by the team.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in developing software for internet-scale applications, particularly in infrastructure contexts.
- Familiarity with distributed systems development; experience with tools such as Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana, Vector, Clickhouse, OTEL, and Loki is advantageous.
- Experience with Kubernetes or similar distributed systems is preferred.
- Development experience with Kubernetes controllers or operators is a significant plus.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for both systems and software.
- Proven experience in engineering large systems, managing projects, and being proactive in project initiation.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration within a service-oriented team.

Compensation Transparency:
This position may encompass multiple career levels. In addition to a base salary, this role is eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units and may also include commission, depending on the specific position. Reddit offers a comprehensive benefits package to U.S.-based employees, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) program with employer matching, generous vacation time, and parental leave.
Pay Range:
The base pay range for this position is: $206,700 — $289,400 USD.
