Position Overview

The Certified Student Respiratory Therapist holding a limited permit issued by the Ohio Medical Board is responsible for delivering respiratory care to patients exhibiting issues with the cardiopulmonary system. This role operates under the supervision of a Registered Respiratory Therapist, following the completion of necessary coursework, proficiency assessments, and orientation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts procedures validated by their Verification of Work Form from an accredited respiratory care program, ensuring proficiency in approved skills.
  • Administers cardiopulmonary care services under the guidance of a Registered Respiratory Therapist, adhering to physician directives and departmental protocols.
  • Examines patient medical records for historical data, current respiratory care orders, and other relevant information (e.g., PFTs, X-rays, blood gases) to facilitate effective therapy planning and execution.
  • Performs respiratory therapy evaluations with the assistance of a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Delivers basic and intermediate respiratory therapy techniques to diverse patient populations, including medicated aerosol delivery, airway clearance therapy, oxygen and humidity management, incentive spirometry, noninvasive monitoring, noninvasive ventilation, blood gas sampling and analysis, and patient observation.
  • Exhibits the knowledge and competencies necessary to address the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of patients.
  • Records and monitors patient responses to therapy, documenting conditions as necessary.
  • Sets up, calibrates, and troubleshoots respiratory care equipment.
  • Operates equipment safely and effectively.
  • Maintains cleanliness of patient care equipment in accordance with infection control standards.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations and performs tasks within the defined scope of practice.
  • Participates in staff meetings and educational opportunities.
  • Handles order entry and billing for services within the hospital's electronic medical record system.
  • Assists in coordinating home care for patients, including patient and family education, equipment review, and cleaning procedures.
  • Accesses medications from an automated dispensing system as authorized.
  • Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited Respiratory Care Program.
  • Possesses a valid temporary limited permit to practice Respiratory Care (RCLP-L1) in Ohio.
  • Provides educational verification from the institution confirming clinical exposure.
  • Has completed the fall semester of the junior year in an AMA and COARC accredited program. Graduates must obtain the RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) credential within 90 days to maintain employment.
  • Progressing towards obtaining a current State Respiratory Therapist License.
  • Prior experience in basic/intermediate respiratory care is preferred.
  • Neonatal/pediatric experience is advantageous when applicable.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required; ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications are preferred or must be obtained within three months of hire.
