Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to fill the role of Security Center Representative. This position is a critical component of the Public Safety Division at Virginia Tech, responsible for providing security, safety, and community services to university employees, students, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and utilize the campus video surveillance system to deter and provide information regarding criminal and safety incidents.
  • Activate the University's emergency notification system as needed.
  • Answer calls on the department's main line and provide assistance or forward to the Regional 911 Center as needed.
  • Monitor direct and silent emergency alarms and notify responsible parties.
  • Provide pertinent data and information to various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Significant experience using computers.
  • Ability to effectively organize, prioritize, and handle several work tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills in person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a diverse clientele.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and follow policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently or with others in an isolated environment for long periods of time.
  • Willingness and/or ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history/background check and a psychological assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree and/or equivalent training/experience with law enforcement, security, communications, or corrections.
  • Experience operating a variety of communication hardware such as phone, two-way radio, or paging systems in a high-volume environment.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office software.
  • Experience dispatching law enforcement, fire, and/or emergency medical services.
  • Experience answering complaints and providing information in a public contact environment.
