About the Job

The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth is seeking to build its pool of adjunct instructors. We are looking for qualified candidates to teach a variety of courses, including online and in-person classes, as well as hybrid courses. The successful candidate will have expertise in Federal Indian law, Tribal administration and budgets, leadership and ethics, and human resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach a range of courses, including online and in-person classes, as well as hybrid courses.
  • Develop and implement course materials, including syllabi and lesson plans.
  • Assess student learning and provide feedback.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development of the department's curriculum.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree or All But Dissertation (ABD) status in a related field OR comparable terminal degree (i.e. JD) OR Master's degree in a related field coupled with a minimum of seven years professional experience in working with American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian tribal governments and/or communities.
  • Two or more years of relevant college-level teaching experience or comparable professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Proficiency, or the willingness to become proficient, in utilizing instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in hand.
  • Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in teaching, including use of instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS).
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge and experience working with American Indian nations.
  • Established record of scholarship (i.e., publications).

About the Department:

The Department of American Indian Studies is committed to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education. The department is located in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Minnesota Duluth, a comprehensive regional university with 85 majors and graduate programs in 25 different fields, and a student enrollment of about 9,000. UMD affords a full range of academic/research resources in a setting more commonly found at smaller colleges. Duluth and its sister city, Superior, Wisconsin, have a combined population of approximately 120,000 and offer an excellent quality of life.

American Indian Studies is an academic department continuing a robust four-decade legacy in which active scholars serve to educate students, colleagues, and the public about tribal sovereignty, indigenous cultures, and the historical and contemporary experiences of Native peoples and nations. The department has five programs: two majors (American Indian Studies and Tribal Administration and Governance), a minor (American Indian Studies), a Master of Tribal Administration and Governance and a Master of Tribal Resource and Environmental Stewardship.
