Job Summary

This position is located in the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI. The successful candidate will be responsible for servicing and maintaining all pipeline systems within the laboratory complex and extending those services to all-standard as well as experimental research equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install and operate high- and low-pressure piping systems, plumbing systems, and related equipment.
  • Align pipes, valves, fittings, and joints for accurate match.
  • Install and operate relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints, and other pressure supporting and controlling devices.
  • Figure pressures and fixtures units within a system and ensure that piping, valves, fittings, and equipment are proper for the work.
  • Relocate existing plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Maintain and repair pipeline systems, RP valves, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Layout, calculate, and requisition the types and sizes of piping, fittings, regulating, or pressure reducing valves, pressure relief valves, check valves, and accessories needed for new installations of systems and equipment.
  • Use plumbing tools and equipment to cut, bend, thread, tape, and other operations necessary in working with various types of pipes.
  • Interpret and apply building plans and blueprints to use shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs, and circles.
  • Hydrostatically test pressure vessels such as retort chambers, air receivers, pulping digesters, etc.
  • Trace and troubleshoot pipelines, systems, and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots.
Requirements
  • Must be a licensed plumber in accordance with Wisconsin Statutes showing current registration with the State of Wisconsin Department of Industry and Human Relations; Safety & Buildings Division.
  • Must be able to use shop mathematics to determine the internal pipe diameter required to pass the desired flow rate at the desired velocity for liquids, gases, steam, and vapors.
  • Must be able to lay out angles, arcs, circles, etc. to control expansion of piping when different heat is applied.
  • Must have knowledge of how various laboratory service systems, including high-pressure steam, are controlled and operated.
  • Must be able to trace piping and plumbing systems either visually or by reading building plans and blueprints.
  • Must be able to layout, calculate, and requisition the types and sizes of piping, fittings, regulating, or pressure reducing valves, pressure relief valves, etc.
  • Must know how to perform the cutting, bending, threading, taping, and other operations necessary in working with various types of pipes.
  • Must be able to use a full range of pipefitting and plumbing tools and equipment.
  • Must apply a working knowledge of state and federal building codes to pipefitting and plumbing tasks.
Working Conditions

The work is done both indoors and outdoors. The worker is subject to burns from hot water, chemicals, and steam while repairing leaks on high-pressure steam piping; strains, cuts, and bruises while working with wrenches on heavy pipes; and abnormal heat, dirt, and dust while installing, repairing, and insulating underground steam line.
