Our organization operates various Help Centers that offer legal advice to individuals involved in civil matters, both in person and through various communication channels. These centers address a broad spectrum of civil legal issues, including landlord-tenant disputes, consumer issues like debt collection, child support, and the expungement of criminal records, thereby helping to eliminate barriers to housing, employment, and family stability.
Role Summary:
We are currently seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to join our team. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing a diverse array of responsibilities efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide concise legal advice and information to self-represented individuals regarding civil legal matters, including landlord-tenant issues, civil claims, record expungement, consumer rights, property recovery, domestic violence orders, family law, and foreclosure.
- Assist individuals in drafting legal documents, preparing for court appearances, completing necessary forms, and understanding legal terminology and processes.
- Offer referrals to suitable legal service organizations and agencies as needed.
- Travel locally between various office locations as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned within the essential functions of the role.
Qualifications:
- Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland.
- A minimum of one year of experience in civil litigation; clinical or clerkship experience is also acceptable.
- Proficient in conducting legal research using Westlaw.
- Exceptional customer service skills, with the ability to empathize with and assist individuals in distress.
- Capable of explaining complex legal concepts in straightforward terms.
Work Environment:
The role typically involves working in an office setting with regular interactions via phone, videoconferencing, instant messaging, and email, as well as in-person meetings. Some responsibilities may also be performed in community settings or remotely.
Compensation and Benefits:
Staff attorneys will receive compensation according to the current salary scale established by the Workers Union, which is subject to annual revisions through collective bargaining. For instance:
- An attorney with one year of experience can expect a salary of $74,575.
- An attorney with three years of experience can expect a salary of $77,935.
- An attorney with five years of experience can expect a salary of $80,175.
Salary placements are determined based on the date of admission to a U.S. state bar and continuous full-time legal work experience thereafter. The current salary range for this position is $74,000 to $115,112.00.
Additionally, Legal Aid Bureau offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan, two weeks of paid time off, sick leave, 14 paid holidays annually, and more.
