Position Overview:
The role of the Unified Communications Engineer is pivotal in designing, developing, and supporting the communication infrastructure at the University of Maryland.

Key Responsibilities:
This position encompasses the lifecycle management and support of the network and communication equipment associated with the VOIP system. Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing teleconferencing, chat, voice, call center operations, automatic call distribution, voicemail, and audio/web/video conferencing.
  • Managing email, instant messaging, AI Agent augmentation, and related systems.
  • Maintaining and managing the Cisco VOIP platform.

This role is also tasked with planning and delivering collaboration services that enhance the educational and professional experiences of students, staff, and faculty.

Essential Duties:
This position is considered essential and may require working at the regular work location or an alternative site during significant emergencies to ensure continuity of services.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Experience:
At least four years of extensive experience in administering and supporting Cisco Unified Communications and telephony platforms in large-scale environments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Candidates should demonstrate strong expertise in at least three of the following areas:

  • Redsky e911 and Cisco Emergency Responder TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP.
  • Management of Cisco Analog Gateways.
  • Cloud-hosted VoIP and/or Collaboration Systems.
  • Scripting and integration using Python and Java, WebEx, Google Suites, Cisco Call Center, Cisco Call Manager, and communication gateways.
  • Experience with SIP-based conference and desktop video systems.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to develop software that manages and maintains the operability of collaboration systems.
  • Capability to lead presentations for small to medium-sized groups.
  • Experience in guiding junior staff members.
  • A commitment to customer service excellence.
  • Leadership in bridging communication between management and team members on technical matters.
  • Effective workload management and timely delivery of assignments.
  • Proficiency in office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces.
