About the Role

Sandy Spring Bank is seeking a Lead Credit Strategist for Special Assets.

This role involves overseeing the Special Assets team and managing the bank's credit approval, administration, and review processes.

You will be responsible for monitoring credit quality and contributing to the formulation and execution of effective account workout policies and procedures.

Collaboration with Relationship Managers and Market Leaders, as well as the Special Assets team, is essential for approving loan workout strategies aimed at minimizing potential losses for the bank.

You will identify potential problem credits and guide the restructuring or exit strategies. Additionally, you will manage and develop team members within your assigned teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Management:
Supervise a team of loan workout officers and support staff. Lead and nurture team members by standardizing work processes and managing workflow capacities.
Chair Monthly and

Quarterly Review Meetings:

Facilitate monthly and quarterly review meetings with line leadership and senior management to discuss overdue loans and any special assets managed by the department or line.

You will be responsible for documenting the minutes from these meetings.

Prepare and present reports for executive management: You will be tasked with preparing and presenting reports, including projections for monthly trend meetings.


Portfolio Oversight:

Manage a loan portfolio comprising large, intricate commercial real estate and/or specialized substandard or criticized credits to mitigate credit losses, ensuring that returns align with risks, and, when feasible, restoring customers to satisfactory ratings.

Recommend suitable workout plans for these credits that translate into acceptable payment arrangements or, alternatively, guide the account towards foreclosure or liquidation.

Provide consultation on deteriorating complex credits and advise on the appropriate actions for handling problematic accounts.

Regularly monitor the progress of workout accounts and suggest necessary adjustments to minimize or avert losses.

Development and Implementation of Credit Policies:

Identify, develop, and propose revisions to internal standards, policies, operating procedures, and new programs to enhance efficiency within the Special Assets domain.

Ensure compliance with policies for assigned areas.

Key Business Partner:

Collaborate with line staff and managers on the rehabilitation or resolution of loans, ensuring adherence to existing credit policy guidelines whenever applicable.

Assist in the training, development, and coordination of special asset officers, portfolio managers, and credit analysts as opportunities arise. Provide guidance and coaching to ensure loan presentations are conducted professionally and meet quality standards. Work closely with the Chief Credit Officer and participate in pipeline meetings to offer insights on structure, concentration levels, portfolio management, asset quality, etc.

Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure adherence to all laws and regulations governing commercial loans.

Occasionally, you may be required to act as a liaison with loan reviewers and state and federal examiners as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
10+ years of experience in Commercial Real Estate and Acquisition Development and Construction Loan workouts.

Strong understanding of CRE credit analysis and monitoring progress in light of market trends, credit/interest rates, economic conditions, and other related factors.

A proven track record of progressively responsible job-related experience.
5+ years of experience in a senior leadership capacity.

Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a strong emphasis on influencing and fostering collaboration among staff and departments with which this role interacts frequently.

Proficiency in personal computer systems to effectively generate reports and analyses using standard desktop processing software.

Physical Requirements:
The role requires reasonable mobility within the work environment. Proficiency in using standard computer and phone systems is essential.

Working Conditions:
Typical office environment with minimal discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, or other unpleasant elements.
The role involves little to no exposure to hazardous conditions.
Occasional travel within the bank's footprint may be necessary.
