POSITION SUMMARY:

In the role of Aquatic Education Specialist, you will report directly to the Aquatics Director and be responsible for delivering swim instruction to participants of all ages and abilities. Your focus will be on creating an encouraging and inclusive environment that promotes respect and support for every individual. You will provide direct leadership, instruction, and motivation to students in various class formats, including group, private, semi-private, and adaptive swim sessions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct swimming lessons tailored to diverse age groups and skill levels, adhering to YMCA standards.
  • Develop and execute lesson plans that cater to the specific needs of participants, assisting them in achieving their swimming objectives.
  • Instruct proper swimming techniques, covering strokes, breathing methods, and water safety protocols in line with YMCA adaptive swim lesson criteria.
  • Offer constructive feedback and encouragement to facilitate skill enhancement among students.
  • Ensure a secure and positive learning atmosphere for all participants.
  • Supervise and manage student behavior throughout lessons.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, members, and colleagues across all organizational levels.
  • Encourage connections among participants and families, promoting engagement with the YMCA community.
  • Communicate information regarding aquatics programs and schedules, directing participants and families to additional resources as needed.
  • Maintain necessary records, including attendance and progress documentation.
  • Adhere to all YMCA policies, regulations, and procedures, including emergency protocols, and complete incident reports when required.
  • Organize and store class equipment appropriately, reporting any damaged items.
  • Mentor and oversee class aides as needed.
  • Lead and support quarterly training sessions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Lift equipment and assist small to average-sized children as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or an equivalent qualification.
  • Certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen are mandatory.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate swim instructor competencies in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Completion of Principles of Youth Development E-Learning within the first month of employment.
  • Attainment of Y-USA Leader Certification within the first three months of employment.
  • Minimum age of 17 years.
  • At least six months of relevant experience.
  • Prior experience working with students is preferred.
  • Strong swimming proficiency and knowledge of various swimming techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Capacity to adapt teaching methods to suit diverse learning styles, including those with cognitive and physical disabilities.
  • Familiarity with behavior management strategies for engaging with children.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (ability to obtain within 30 days of employment).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience in swim instruction or coaching roles is advantageous.
  • Current or former competitive swimming experience is a plus.
  • Adaptive swim certification or the willingness to obtain it within 30 days of employment.
