Job Overview

As the Manager of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), you will spearhead a multifaceted team within an operational framework, fostering a robust culture of safety, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.

Your role encompasses the creation and execution of comprehensive safety protocols, laboratory safety measures, industrial hygiene practices, and environmental initiatives. You will ensure adherence to regulatory standards while cultivating a secure and environmentally aware workplace.

Leading a cross-functional EHS team, you will navigate various operational phases, including research and development, manufacturing, construction, and ongoing operations. Your leadership will be pivotal in maintaining the overall health and safety of the facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Guide a diverse team of EHS professionals, offering mentorship and opportunities for professional development.
  • Design, implement, and uphold environmental, health, and safety programs to guarantee compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Assess potential hazards and propose strategies to mitigate associated risks.
  • Enhance the Job Hazard Analysis process to elevate operational safety.
  • Formulate and execute plans aimed at reducing incident rates.
  • Establish emergency response protocols and ensure comprehensive employee training.
  • Develop and conduct EHS-related training sessions, including safety orientations for new hires.
  • Champion a culture of environmental responsibility and advocate for sustainable practices across the organization.
  • Stay informed on all pertinent environmental, health, and safety regulations, ensuring the organization’s compliance with applicable laws.
  • Prepare and submit necessary regulatory reports, permits, and documentation.
  • Conduct inspections and audits to assess compliance and identify areas for enhancement.
  • Oversee hazardous materials management, including inventory, disposal, recycling, and handling.
  • Collaborate with vendors to support the facility's environmental health and safety initiatives.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams, management, and external agencies to align with safety objectives.
  • Facilitate open communication regarding EHS matters, including leading safety committee meetings and training sessions.
  • Work closely with operational, maintenance, laboratory, and research teams to ensure effective hazard identification and mitigation.
  • Investigate incidents and accidents to determine root causes and implement preventive measures.
  • Maintain incident records and report findings to management and regulatory bodies as required.
  • Analyze safety performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Drive results through the Objectives and Key Results (OKR) framework, leveraging partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Act as a first responder and member of the Emergency Response Team.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience overseeing safety programs, regulatory compliance, and program development.
  • Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal EHS regulations relevant to the industry.
  • Expertise in a specific EHS discipline; certification is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in conducting detailed incident investigations and risk assessments.
  • Extensive knowledge of EHS regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Able to thrive in a dynamic R&D environment.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proven success in cultivating a strong safety culture and reducing incident rates.
  • Collaborative team player with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
  • Ability to navigate various physical environments, including ascending and descending ladders and scaffolding.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces and adjusting to different positions as needed.
  • Exposure to diverse environmental conditions, including temperature variations and outdoor elements.
  • Some travel may be required, up to 10%.
Safety and PPE Requirements
  • Experience in handling hazardous materials and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
