Job Responsibilities
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals by fostering recovery, self-determination, and overall wellness.

Facilities Overview:

DBHDS operates a variety of facilities, including eight behavioral health centers for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a behavioral rehabilitation center.

These state facilities provide structured, intensive services for individuals facing mental health challenges, intellectual disabilities, or substance use disorders.

This role is based at the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72-bed accredited state mental health facility.

Key responsibilities include conducting individual assessments and evaluations, delivering quality music therapy services through group and individual interventions for adults aged 18 to 64 with serious mental health issues, addiction challenges, and trauma experiences.



Key Duties Include:
* Planning and facilitating therapeutic interventions during the day, evening, weekends, and holidays that are functionally based, promote recovery, and assist individuals in achieving their highest level of functioning in the community.
* Documenting attendance and progress in accordance with hospital and departmental policies.
* Conducting assessments and developing treatment interventions in collaboration with the treatment team.
* Providing cross-coverage as needed across all service areas.

This position offers the flexibility to work either four 10-hour days or five 8-hour days, including at least one weekend day.



Minimum Qualifications:
A degree in Music Therapy (graduate or undergraduate) from an accredited institution is required.
Board certification and licensure as a music therapist in Virginia.
A valid driver's license, which must remain valid and in good standing throughout employment.
Ability to operate state vehicles, including vans and wheelchair-equipped passenger vans.
Knowledge of mental health disorders, substance abuse disorders, and treatment intervention models.

Ability to design, plan, organize, and implement music therapy programs aimed at enhancing skills, social interactions, and work behaviors using recovery principles and trauma-informed care.

Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills.
A strong awareness of safety and security protocols.
Capability to manage aggressive individuals using approved therapeutic techniques (training will be provided).

Ability to organize leisure and recreational programming during weekends, holidays, and evenings, and to work irregular hours as assigned.

Understanding of the purpose of active treatment.
Ability to collaborate effectively with various professional disciplines as a team member and consultant.

Skills in organizing tasks, utilizing electronic health records, conducting quality assurance audits, and preparing reports.



Additional Considerations:
Experience as a Music Therapist.
Experience in a mental health facility.
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is a plus.
