Landfill Operations Specialist

The Solid Waste Landfill Operator is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service while performing semi-skilled labor related to the management and operation of the landfill facilities in Archuleta County. This role involves operating various heavy machinery, assisting the public, processing payments, overseeing waste management, directing traffic, and managing access to the landfill.
SUPERVISION STRUCTURE
This position reports directly to the Public Works Director.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory duties are assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are representative of the types of work that may be performed. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if they are similar or related.
- Operates a variety of light and heavy machinery, including but not limited to roll-off trucks, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and compactors necessary for landfill operations.
- Conducts routine maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
- Performs inspections on tires, lights, brakes, fuel, oil, and water levels.
- Interacts with the public utilizing landfill services, processes payments, directs traffic, and monitors waste disposal.
- Ensures compliance with County regulations regarding waste disposal at the landfill.
- Keeps accurate records of all customers using the landfill, including ticketing and daily deposit logs.
- Identifies customers who may be on the bad check list or have issues with solid waste charges.
- Promotes and practices safe working conditions while performing job duties.
- Provides assistance at the transfer station and recycling areas as required.
- Helps maintain a clean and organized transfer station.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.
Education: Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.
Experience: At least one year of experience in a related field or performing similar duties.
Licenses and Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class 'B' CDL along with a current DOT medical card.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Understanding of disposal regulations and operations of a subtitle D landfill, with the ability to interpret design plans and ensure compliance with CDPHE regulations.
- Familiarity with practices, methods, and equipment used in landfill maintenance and operations.
- Knowledge of safe working practices and procedures.
- Ability to operate various hand and power tools and heavy machinery safely.
- Understanding of laws and regulations governing landfill operations.
- Capability to operate landfill maintenance equipment effectively.
- Ability to identify hazardous materials and understand the risks associated with handling them.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Excellent customer service skills when interacting with clients and the public.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff, agency representatives, and community members.
- Basic math skills for calculations and record-keeping.
- Ability to maintain daily logs and documentation independently.
