About the Position

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Licensing Associate, Life Science to join our team. As a key member of our Office of Technology Transfer, you will play a critical role in protecting and commercializing new technologies developed at George Mason University.

Responsibilities
  • Solicit, screen, and evaluate innovation disclosures to identify potential opportunities for commercialization.
  • Develop and recommend intellectual property protection strategies for selected disclosures, working closely with faculty and researchers to ensure effective protection of their innovations.
  • Prepare and distribute technology descriptions to facilitate communication between patent attorneys, inventors, and industry partners.
  • Collaborate with the Director of OTT to authorize patent applications and facilitate communication between patent attorneys and inventors.
  • Develop and implement strategies for marketing inventions and technologies to industry, conducting market research and identifying potential commercial applications and business partners.
  • Draft, negotiate, and execute licenses and other related contracts, ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Participate in University Technology Transfer outreach and education, promoting the mission and business of OTT to faculty, staff, students, and industry partners.
  • Work collaboratively across various stakeholders within the University, including researchers, technical staff, and legal counsel, to ensure effective protection and commercialization of university research and technology.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as life sciences, engineering, or business.
  • Experience engaging researchers regarding their innovations and developing effective strategies for commercialization.
  • Strong knowledge of intellectual property laws and regulations, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.
  • Ability to understand complex technology and communicate effectively with non-technical individuals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to draft and negotiate complex contracts and agreements.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in a related field, such as a Ph.D. in life sciences or engineering.
  • United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Registered Patent Practitioner or equivalent experience.
  • Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) or Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) designation.
  • Experience in technology transfer, intellectual property management, and licensing.
  • Strong technical knowledge in life sciences, allied sciences, or related fields.
