Job Title: Control Operator Crew Chief ECWA

Job Summary:

The Control Operator Crew Chief ECWA is responsible for supervising the efficient operation and maintenance of a radio-controlled computerized control center at the Erie County Water Authority's Service Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the monitoring of the system operation through the use of computer terminals.
  • May operate the system remotely and/or manually when the situation warrants takeover.
  • Supervise the lubrication and oiling of pump and motor bearings and related equipment.
  • Supervise the cleaning and painting of equipment including pumps and motors.
  • Supervise and perform a variety of mechanical maintenance and custodial tasks.
  • Supervise the operation and servicing of auxiliary motors and equipment.
  • Supervise the dismantling and reassembling pumps and motors when repairs or overhaul is indicated.
  • May open, close and adjust valves at system or when repairs are needed.
  • Directs the travel of the circuit booster pump stations to assure proper operation of pumps, motors and equipment which may be operating manually or remote control and to visually inspect buildings, grounds and equipment.
  • Responds to calls in emergencies at any hour.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:
  • A.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of electric pumps and auxiliary equipment, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • B.) Eight (8) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of electric pumps and auxiliary equipment, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

A medical examination may be required before appointment.

Proof of service must be submitted before the list is established to receive additional points.

NOTICES TO APPEAR FOR THE EXAMINATION ARE MAILED APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE EXAMINATION DATE

NO CELL PHONES ARE PERMITTED AT THE EXAM SITE.

The examination date is November 9, 2024.

Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by October 2, 2024.

The test guide is available online at https://www.ny.gov/civil-service.

The scope of the examination includes operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment, tools, mechanical aptitude, and reading of scales, meters, and gauges.

Candidates may be required to take a medical examination to determine if they are medically and physically capable of performing the duties of the position.

Candidates may be investigated or called for an interview to verify information contained on the application.

The eligible list resulting from an examination may also be used for appointment to the same title or to any other title deemed to be similar and appropriate.

Eligible lists are active for a minimum of one year and a maximum of four years from the date established.

Candidates may be subject to a thorough background investigation or psychological evaluation when required to determine eligibility for appointment.

Applicants may be required to authorize access to educational, employment, criminal history, and other records check as part of such investigation or participate in related tests or interviews.

Criminal convictions or other offenses are subject to evaluation and may result in disqualification pursuant to Section 50 of the New York State Civil Service Law.

Applicant will be required to submit the necessary fees for the fingerprint processing, where required.

A $20.00 filing fee is required for this exam.

A waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household.

A waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are determined eligible for Medicaid, or receiving Supplemental Security Income payments, or Public Assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Family Assistance or Safety Net Assistance) or are certified Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligible through a State or local social service agency.
