Job Summary:

Under the guidance of the Laboratory Director, or their designee, this Clinical Laboratory Scientist Extern will continue training on analytical procedures and perform pre-analytical and post-analytical procedures according to California Lab Law and Regulations for non-licensed personnel.

Enhance patient care and service through interdepartmental cooperation and quality assurance protocols.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Verify that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the correct patient and that the correct test is being performed.
  • Perform tests on post-verified patient specimens and unknowns, and review results with a supervisor or designee for competency assessment.
  • Load specimens on analyzers as directed by a CLS and locate specimens for add-on tests.
  • Determine the adequacy and qualities of specimens submitted for testing and give specimens to licensed laboratory personnel for final disposition.
  • Practice quality control procedures and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of quality control for ensuring accuracy of clinical data.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure, under the supervision of a CLS.
  • Record on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
  • Receive supplies into a testing area, date, and store them appropriately under the direction of the CLS.
  • Perform data entry for statistical analysis to support the CLS's evaluation, validation, and correlation studies.
  • Assist with special projects not requiring licensed staff, as directed by the supervisor or manager.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other incumbents of the organization.
  • Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) or related field and recently completed a California State-approved CLS training program at a Kaiser Permanente Northern California facility and eligible to take the State-approved CLS licensing exam by start of the CLS Extern position.
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist License (California) within 3 months of hire.

Additional Requirements:

Computer application experience/proficiency preferred.
