The Johns Hopkins University is looking for a Senior LAN Systems Administrator. Responsibilities include the installation and evaluation of new software, operating systems, servers, and associated hardware products, as well as the integration of new technologies and software updates into the existing infrastructure. The administrator will assess user requirements within the computing environment and propose solutions that align with those needs. Maintaining the integrity of the computing environment efficiently and cost-effectively is paramount. This position also involves the delivery, relocation, and installation of computing devices and related software, along with inventory management.
Job Responsibilities
Analysis and Design
- Evaluate and document customer requirements within the computing environment through direct engagement to identify business challenges and recommend solutions for complex issues.
- Develop and document comprehensive implementation strategies.
- Lead the installation of network operating systems, cabling, servers, and client hardware, including the migration of files and applications from other systems.
- Assess and recommend vendor software and hardware by researching industry tools to support customer needs.
- Create utilities for device management to enhance overall service delivery and reduce costs.
- Establish device management protocols and standards to ensure compliance with organizational objectives.
Installation, Configuration, and Maintenance
- Oversee the delivery, relocation, and installation of computing devices and software, ensuring adherence to industry standards.
- Manage the lifecycle of computing devices by maintaining inventories and performing necessary repairs and replacements.
- Respond to and resolve alerts regarding server and device performance using appropriate diagnostic tools.
- Develop and maintain backup procedures to ensure data recovery capabilities.
- Document and implement disaster recovery plans for departmental equipment.
- Engage with customers to support business continuity initiatives.
Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues using established procedures and diagnostic tools.
- Utilize Help Desk software for tracking and resolving reported problems.
- Stay updated on supported technologies to enhance skills and knowledge.
Documentation and Communication
- Communicate and document system updates and installations to relevant staff.
- Develop training and support documentation for both technical and non-technical users.
- Manage vendor relationships to resolve technical issues effectively.
Relationship Management
- Provide technical support to customers regarding PCs, software, and device operations.
- Advocate for customer needs within IT groups to ensure high-quality service.
- Complete assigned projects in accordance with service level agreements to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Collaborate with other LAN Administrators to keep systems updated and coordinated.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficient documentation skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods.

Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college coursework.
- A minimum of five years of relevant experience.
