Job Summary

This position is in the Public Office Division of the Clerk's Office in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process all newly filed applications for allowance of appeals, petitions for review and special writs of mandamus, habeas corpus, and prohibition.
  • Perform duties and assignments independently, with goals and objectives of the office set by the director.
  • Review and process all pro se motions and pleadings to determine nature and decision of requests.
  • Ensure filed pleadings are properly coded and in compliance with court rules.
  • Prepare and mail letters of non-compliance to litigants; determine the correct docketing action requested by the filing party; contact parties by phone as necessary regarding non-compliance submissions and recommend appropriate curing action.
  • Update actions on the Court's automated database docketing system, schedule follow-up actions and forward suspense coordination copies of the pleadings to the Case Management Branch or the Central Legal Staff for further disposition.
  • Maintain a suspense file for returned pleadings and incomplete petition requests.
  • Communicate with pro se parties and attorneys appearing in person and via the public counter.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports as required.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma and three (3) years general administrative experience in a high-volume office setting.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
Working Conditions

This position is located in the District of Columbia Courts and requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
