Job Summary

This Clinical Pharmacy Technician position is located within the Pharmacy Service at the Dayton Ohio and supports the clinical service as assigned, utilizing education, experience, and expertise.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of pharmacy principles and practices, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing first-line support in administrative and basic clinical functions to the pharmacist-managed anticoagulation clinics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interact directly with patients and family members to provide education and support.
  • Evaluate lab values and determine follow-up intervals for patients on warfarin.
  • Take medication histories and counsel patients to support clinic activities.
  • Communicate effectively with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, schedulers, and other healthcare personnel.
  • Assist with direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) labs, JLV, and outside faxed labels.
  • Provide patient education on pharmacy topics such as basic anticoagulation education, the requesting refill process, patient rights and responsibilities.
  • Monitor clinic records for patients who fail to show for scheduled appointments and initiate reminders to ensure continuum of care.
  • Monitor inventory needs in patient care areas and replenish clinical supplies as needed to perform patient care duties.
  • Triage incoming telephone calls from patients, family members, and/or caregivers to address a variety of issues.
  • Triage clinic consults to schedule new patients for enrollment in clinic.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C.
  • Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) OR National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
  • Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Technician, GS Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must possess at least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) AND Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to meeting the experience for the GS-08 level, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated: - Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) - Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures - Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
