Job Description and Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health's mission and strategic plan by performing high-quality, timely laboratory testing for the diagnosis and epidemiologic investigation of bacterial diseases of great public health importance in the State of California.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform identification of bacterial pathogens using classical and molecular methods.
  • Report results to submitters.
  • Conduct quality control and assist with test validation and verification studies.
  • Use the MDL Lab Information System (LIMS) and update protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Apply good safety practices in the workplace.
Requirements:
  • Public Health Microbiologist License (PHMxxx) issued by Dept of Public Health.
  • Ability to transfer large numbers of testing materials in a timely and safe manner.
  • Basic laboratory knowledge and skills, including culture inoculation and Gram stain.
  • Ability to use a pipette and demonstrate good aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic operation of general laboratory equipment.
Working Conditions:

The incumbent works under the Research Scientist Supervisor II, Bacterial Diseases Section.

The selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment and continue to maintain California residency as a condition of employment.
