We are seeking a dedicated Polymer Research Scientist to become a vital part of our team at Avery Dennison.
Our Advanced Materials Solutions (AMS) division excels in pioneering innovation, scouting ecosystems, mitigating risks, and advancing core adhesive technologies, coatings, and novel film chemistry.
The ideal candidate will possess hands-on experience in R&D, specializing in adhesive formulations, polymer-based dielectric materials, and electrically conductive composites, with a particular emphasis on general polymers, especially acrylics.
Proven expertise in synthetic polymerization methods, formulation of polymer composites, polymer processing, and relevant testing techniques.
This position entails engaging in a variety of polymer-centric research initiatives, developing technology platforms, and executing customer-specific projects, particularly in the realms of adhesives and materials for electronics, communications, and energy storage/harvesting sectors.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement experimental protocols.
- Synthesize polymers and coatings utilizing diverse techniques such as free-radical, condensation, thermal, actinic, and controlled architecture.
- Polymerize, formulate, and enhance adhesive compositions tailored for specific industrial needs.
- Formulate for key properties including electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, adhesion strength, thermal stability, and environmental compatibility.
- Characterize polymers and adhesives for performance metrics using appropriate analytical techniques, electrical assessments, and physical testing methods.
- Stay informed on the latest advancements, market trends, and competitive products through comprehensive literature reviews, guiding research directions accordingly.
- Lead project teams in foundational research and customer-oriented R&D for conductive and electronic materials, developing and executing detailed technical project plans.
- Determine necessary resources, actions, and timelines for project completion.
- Act as a liaison for patent matters, collaborating with corporate counsel on marketing rights, patent applications, and office actions, while assisting colleagues in patent activities and filings.
- Facilitate knowledge transfer to peers through presentations, technical documentation, and daily interactions, while mentoring junior colleagues in both conventional and innovative polymerization technologies and formulations.
- Serve as the primary technical contact for projects, engaging with senior external stakeholders on significant technical issues, often necessitating coordination across organizations.
- Actively participate in process safety management and employee safety initiatives.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts through input on raw material selection and process enhancements.
