Key Responsibilities
As a Hydrologic Technician within the U.S. Department of the Interior, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Conducting stream discharge measurements across various conditions, sometimes under challenging circumstances.
- Utilizing sound judgment to adapt to field conditions and resolve subtle issues.
- Identifying the most effective techniques and protocols for gathering representative hydrologic data.
- Collecting hydrologic data through diverse methods and equipment.
- Performing and evaluating statistical and technical analyses of a wide range of hydrologic data obtained in the field.
- Preparing materials for publication, including maps, tables, and other illustrative content.
- Collecting, processing, and preparing samples for laboratory analysis, using the most suitable techniques based on complex field conditions.
- Employing various methods to compute, verify, and review extensive water-quality monitoring records.
- Operating a government-owned or leased vehicle as part of your duties.
Physical Demands
This role regularly requires significant dexterity, agility, and physical exertion, including climbing or working from tall ladders and scaffolding, navigating treacherous footing such as slippery riverbanks or steep terrain, and lifting heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
Work Environment
Office conditions do not necessitate special safety precautions; however, field conditions may involve extreme temperatures, precipitation, potential wildlife encounters, and hazardous situations such as flooding or exposure to irritants. Appropriate clothing or gear may be required.
Conditions of Employment

- The selected candidate may be subject to a one-year probationary period.

- A valid state driver's license and a safe driving record are mandatory.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is required.
Special Requirements
- Operating a government vehicle is a requirement of this position; candidates must possess a valid state license and a safe driving record.

- Travel for official business will be required, and the selected candidate must apply for a charge card within 30 days of appointment.
- A background investigation will be conducted, and continued employment is contingent upon successful completion and favorable adjudication.
Qualifications
Experience is defined as one year of work experience, which equates to twelve months of full-time work (35-40 hours per week). Part-time experience is prorated. Applicants must meet specific educational and experience requirements as outlined for various grade levels.
Education
Relevant education may substitute for experience, and applicants should have completed coursework in fields related to hydrology, engineering, or natural sciences.
