Machine Learning (ML) is a cornerstone of Block's daily operations and long-term strategy. Its application has surged in recent years and continues to grow. As various teams adopt ML capabilities, the necessity for shared resources to prevent redundancy has become increasingly important.
Team InsightsThe Machine Learning Foundations (MLF) team develops scalable and composable components tailored for ML applications. We partner closely with platform and product teams across the organization to enhance their growth by addressing complex challenges that affect multiple business units. Given the rapid expansion of Block's ML community, MLF focuses on a targeted set of use cases that yield significant benefits for our internal stakeholders.
Role DescriptionWe are seeking a seasoned engineer to join the MLF team. Initially, your primary focus will be on creating self-service tools for feature engineering, but your role will encompass the entire machine learning lifecycle. As a platform engineer, you will collaborate with our internal stakeholders to identify their requirements and translate them into sustainable software solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop tools and systems that enhance the productivity and satisfaction of data scientists.
- Collaborate with data science and engineering teams across Block, particularly in Cash and Square, to understand their challenges and provide effective solutions.
- Lead discussions on architecture and design to ensure our platform is modular, scalable, resilient, and built for sustainability.
- Mentor colleagues and assist engineers from other teams who integrate with our platform.
- Utilize your machine learning expertise to offer valuable insights and feedback.
- Participate in an on-call rotation, maintaining high reliability standards while ensuring the team's on-call duties are manageable.
Required Skills
- 8+ years of combined experience in software engineering and machine learning engineering.
- 1+ years of experience with the machine learning lifecycle, including feature engineering and model training.
- Strong technical judgment and significant experience managing complex technical concepts.
- Experience with large-scale distributed systems designed around machine learning.
- A proven history of effective collaboration with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
- Preferred: experience in building machine learning platforms or infrastructure.
Block employs a market-based approach to compensation, which may vary based on location. The successful candidate's starting salary will be determined by job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be adjusted in the future.
