Job Responsibilities
In accordance with established protocols, policies, and procedures, provide essential technical assistance to healthcare professionals, including medical and nursing staff. Responsibilities encompass a variety of routine clinical tasks, such as:
- Collection of laboratory specimens
- Performing venipuncture and capillary blood draws for both adults and children
- Conducting clinical laboratory tests, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, glucose, urine pregnancy tests, fecal occult blood tests, sedimentation rates, and urine dipstick tests
- Collecting sputum samples
- Monitoring patients for changes in condition based on established protocols
- Sterilizing instruments and managing inventory of supplies
- Maintaining logs, files, and records, as well as compiling clinical data and statistics
Work under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Specific training in specialized duties related to the assigned area is required.
1. Direct Patient Care
- Provide technical support to healthcare professionals as per established protocols or orders from licensed providers.
- Deliver direct services in various public health clinic environments, including measurements (height, weight, blood pressure, BMI, temperature, hearing, and vision screenings) and documentation of results.
- Report any abnormal findings to the appropriate clinical staff.
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws on patients of all ages.
- Guide patients through specimen collection procedures.
- Assist with patient flow and support examinations and special procedures as necessary.
2. Laboratory Services
- Deliver accurate and timely services to clients requiring laboratory draws.
- Maintain proficiency in laboratory skills and responsibilities.
- Oversee quality assurance processes for laboratory operations.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of laboratory documentation.
- Maintain logs for laboratory results and quality control.
- Follow up on any missing or delayed laboratory reports.
3. Inventory Management
- Prepare and sanitize examination rooms and laboratory areas; restock clinical supplies as needed.
- Research and evaluate new products as required.
- Maintain sterilization of instruments and manage inventory and records effectively.
4. Program Support and Additional Duties
- Achieve and maintain competencies in current public health services and emerging health initiatives.
- Participate in cross-training and demonstrate proficiency in various assigned roles.
- Engage in program evaluation and contribute to ensuring quality service and successful outcomes.
- Assist in community outreach efforts and contribute to educational initiatives.
- Be prepared to perform additional duties as required, including emergency support functions.
This position may require travel to various health departments as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in performing health screening tests and procedures, including venipuncture.
- Knowledge of basic clinical and laboratory procedures and medical terminology.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations and as part of a team; strong customer service and communication skills.
- Familiarity with specimen collection and processing protocols.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and adherence to safety policies.
Additional Considerations
- Experience in a public health or healthcare setting, including sterilization of medical equipment.
- Office support experience in a medical environment and bilingual skills are advantageous.
- Certification as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Patient Care Technician is preferred.
