Key Responsibilities of a Youth Support Specialist:

Act as a positive role model for youth, delivering support, coaching, training, and supervision within a nurturing and constructive relationship. This role involves direct engagement with the GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program, an evidence-based initiative aimed at preventing gang involvement and youth violence through school-based curricula led by law enforcement officers.

Core Duties Include:

  • Assisting youth in developing interpersonal, communication, social, and problem-solving skills, alongside age-appropriate behaviors and constructive leisure activities.
  • Organizing and supervising recreational and social events based on collaboratively established goals with youth, parents, and the placing agency.
  • Exhibiting sensitivity to the needs of youth, demonstrating flexibility, a non-threatening demeanor, respect for autonomy, confidentiality, socio-cultural values, personal aspirations, lifestyle choices, and family dynamics, while maintaining professional boundaries and ethics.
  • Providing the contracted number of hours per month/week as stipulated by the placing agency.
  • Completing session progress notes for each meeting and submitting them to the supervisor as required.
  • Participating in FAPT, treatment team, or family engagement meetings upon supervisor's request.
  • Maintaining current certifications in CPR and First Aid.
  • Ensuring a driving record that meets Elk Hill's standards.
  • Holding liability coverage at the level required by Elk Hill on a personal auto insurance policy.
  • Engaging in face-to-face supervision with the supervisor at least once a month.
  • Collaborating with all Elk Hill staff to enhance the overall quality of the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Experience working with children and/or adolescents.
  • Willingness to travel and work during non-traditional hours.
  • Exhibit consistent personal integrity in interactions with youth, families, colleagues, and agency personnel.
