Position Overview

As a Senior Materials Engineer within GE Renewable Energy Power and Aviation, you will leverage your expertise in materials science and project management to define strategies and oversee critical alloy and modality development initiatives that support our aviation products for both commercial and military applications. Collaborating with a diverse team of manufacturing, design, sourcing, and quality engineers, you will play a pivotal role in advancing innovative technologies such as Cold Spray, Binder Jet, Directed Energy Deposition (DED), and Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) across various alloys including Titanium, Aluminum, Nickel, and Cobalt-based materials.

Key Responsibilities:

Core Duties:

In this role, your responsibilities will encompass but are not limited to:
  • Enhancing Sourcing and Supply Chain operations through the application of Additive Manufacturing techniques to optimize delivery and cost efficiency.
  • Leading interdisciplinary teams (materials, design, manufacturing, quality) to elevate the technical maturity of advanced additive manufacturing processes utilizing TRL/MRL methodologies.
  • Implementing technical projects and programs aimed at mitigating risks associated with new additive manufacturing techniques, while building and applying substantial domain knowledge in the additive sector.
  • Influencing standard operating procedures for quality assurance by owning and/or authoring key specifications governing powder, printed castings, and finished part standards; driving process efficiencies and updating additive specifications as necessary.
  • Designing and executing studies to assess the impact of variations within manufacturing process parameters, utilizing findings to recommend updates to specifications, technical plans, and standard operating procedures.
  • Leading or assisting in initiatives to ensure part quality with reduced dependence on physical testing, increasing reliance on non-destructive evaluation methods, including in-process monitoring and other standardized techniques.
  • Providing Materials Application Engineering (MAE) support for structural components under development that utilize additive manufacturing.
  • Establishing cross-product connections, leveraging additive expertise to offer insights on existing and potential additive components.
  • Proactively identifying lessons learned and best practices, ensuring thorough documentation.
  • Consulting and sharing knowledge with colleagues engaged in the development of additive technologies.
  • Communicating significant advancements to leadership and collaborating on the development of technical roadmaps.
  • Leading or supporting root cause analyses and the implementation of corrective actions.
In this position, you will develop:
  • A systems-oriented perspective through the comprehensive integration of design, materials science, manufacturing, and quality assurance.
  • A deep technical understanding of GE's cutting-edge manufacturing technologies.
  • Leadership skills in cross-division and cross-business collaboration.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or a closely related Engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in a materials science engineering role or a related additive manufacturing position.
  • Practical experience with material processing or handling.
Preferred Attributes:
  • 10 years of experience in materials science, including at least 7 years of industry experience in addition to any academic background.
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing processes (e.g., laser powder bed, cold spray, binder jet, DED, EBM) and operational experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly in technical documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Proven capability to analyze and resolve complex issues.
  • Program management expertise; ability to develop, document, promote, and execute programs.
  • Ability to guide and influence others, particularly those outside of direct reporting lines.
  • Capability to thrive in a dynamic team environment.
  • Background in material characterization, including metallography, thermal and mechanical property testing and analysis.
  • Strong foundation in physical metallurgy.
  • Experience with titanium and/or aluminum-based aerospace alloys.
  • Experience with nickel and/or cobalt-based aerospace alloys.
