Job Summary

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse (RN) First Assist to join our team in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to the surgical team during the intra-operative phase of surgical care.
  • Work in collaboration with the surgeon and healthcare team in the performance of surgical procedures, including assessment, planning, directing, providing, and evaluating advanced nursing care.
  • Participate in a regional on-call rotation to provide surgical assistance for elective, emergent, and urgent surgical cases.
Practice Standards of Performance
  • Collaborate with the surgical team on the plan of care.
  • Provide knowledge-based technical assistance to the surgeon during the operative procedure according to AORN standards, licensure, state regulation, and facility/practice protocols.
  • Evaluate the patient post-operatively according to facility protocols.
Requirements
  • Obtain and demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to provide appropriate population-based and culturally sensitive care to patients and families through education, training, and experience.
  • Perform RNFA responsibilities in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Oregon, institutional policies and procedures of Kaiser Permanente, and the AORN Position Statement on RN First Assistants.
  • Review and update skills checklist on an ongoing basis as specified by policies of Kaiser Permanente.
Intraoperative Nursing Behaviors
  • Handle tissue, provide exposure, use instruments, clamp, cut, and ligate as directed by the surgeon, provide hemostasis, and suture as directed by the surgeon.
  • Bring patient X-rays into the room.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Notify the Charge Nurse or designee if films are not available.
  • Assist in patient transport to the operating room and patient transfer to the operating room table.
  • Set up ESU, lights, suction for the sterile field.
  • Monitor free-counted items on the sterile field.
  • Assist with instrumentation and equipment as requested.
  • Review chart for pertinent data.
Education and Certifications
  • Nurse Operating Room Certificate.
