About the Role

An ESS substitute bus aide plays a vital role in assisting the school bus driver in providing a safe, efficient, and organized transportation service for students. They support the needs of students during routine activities and emergency situations, effectively supervising and managing student behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with special needs, including entering and exiting the bus
  • Ensure the safe and orderly conduct of students on the bus
  • Provide instruction to students on proper safety procedures, including seat belt usage
  • Participate in scheduled emergency bus evacuation drills
  • Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students
  • Demonstrate support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities
  • Help students board and exit school buses, assisting the bus driver in maintaining order and comfort
  • Assist bus drivers in keeping routine records related to student transportation or behavior
  • Transfer students on and off buses
  • Assist with movement of students with special needs, including positioning, lifting, transferring, and physical intervention
  • Assist teachers and bus drivers on field trips by helping students with physical needs, maintaining discipline, and reinforcing learning situations
  • Assist bus drivers in maintaining discipline and responding to the physical needs of students
  • Perform basic health, first aid, or basic nursing care for special education students as directed or authorized by a school nurse
  • Attend IEP meetings, if requested
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters
  • Perform duties in a courteous and professional manner
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility
  • Work cooperatively and productively with supervisor(s) and other system staff to ensure the system's vision, goals, and strategies are implemented
  • Engage in professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics and effective leadership
  • Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel
  • Respond to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner
  • Use effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member
  • Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws
  • Report absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)

Qualifications

  • ABI/FBI Criminal History Clearance
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  • Demonstrated success in relevant work experience
  • Ability and willingness to work in a highly demanding, stressful environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member
  • Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, and mobility to perform job responsibilities
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
  • Ability to follow instructions and accept constructive feedback
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and assist students with specific hygiene needs
  • Ability to transfer students and provide physical intervention when required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed to provide adult assistance on special education buses
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require
