Job Overview

Compensation begins at $29.00/hour or $60,324.58 for candidates without prior experience.

Salary adjustments may be considered based on years of service in DCJS Law Enforcement, with a full salary range from $58,000 to $101,248.78.

Additional earnings may be available through shift differentials, holiday pay, and other premium compensations.

As a Deputy Sheriff, you will engage in critical protective service work within the Sheriff's Office, undertaking various general and support duty assignments that involve personal risk. Your role will be supervised by a Deputy Sergeant, and you must be prepared to work any shift throughout the week, including weekends and holidays.

Deputies are assigned to an 11.5-hour shift, rotating in a pattern of 3 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on, and 3 days off.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enforce laws, investigate criminal activities, serve civil documents, and ensure public safety.
  • Operate a patrol vehicle to monitor for traffic violations, suspicious behavior, and disturbances.
  • Respond to radio calls and address complaints.
  • Make arrests when necessary, using appropriate restraints.
  • Subdue suspects using approved self-defense techniques.
  • Issue citations for traffic violations and maintain accurate arrest records.
  • Conduct interviews with victims and witnesses, securing evidence and property.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on daily activities and assignments.
  • Serve civil processes and execute criminal arrest warrants.
  • Engage in crime prevention activities and may take on special assignments.
  • Oversee inmate security and court duties, ensuring compliance with jail regulations.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Familiarity with law enforcement methods and procedures; understanding of local geography and key locations; knowledge of Sheriff's Office regulations; ability to follow oral and written instructions and produce clear reports; capacity to interact courteously and effectively with the public; skill in assessing situations and making sound decisions; physical fitness and proficiency in firearms and vehicle operation; compliance with all qualifications mandated by the Code of Virginia and the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Possession of a valid driver's license in Virginia is necessary.

Must meet all training and educational requirements set by the Stafford County Sheriff's Office and the State Criminal Justice System.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and at least 21 years old at the time of hire or reach that age before graduating from the academy.

This position is essential and requires attendance during local government closures, with potential for call-backs to maintain staffing levels.

Successful candidates must complete written assessments, physical agility tests, interviews, polygraph examinations, background checks, physical and psychological evaluations, and drug screenings.

Physical Requirements:
This role involves heavy physical activity, requiring the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Duties may include lifting or dragging objects weighing up to 165 pounds occasionally. The job demands climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions. Effective communication and hearing abilities are essential for conveying instructions and receiving information. Visual acuity is necessary for various tasks, including operating vehicles and inspecting details. The position may expose workers to various environmental conditions and hazards.
