Job Summary:

The Skilled Trades Supervisor is a key position in the Facilities Management team at Arkansas State University, responsible for overseeing the skilled tradesmen in one of the zones across campus. This role requires strong leadership and technical skills to manage the work of subordinate tradesmen, prioritize tasks, and ensure compliance with established trade practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of skilled and semi-skilled tradesmen, prioritizing tasks and ensuring timely completion of projects
  • Determine schedules, sequences, and assignments for work activities based on work priority, quantity of equipment, and skill of subordinates
  • Plan and execute small projects, preparing material lists and work schedules, and reading and interpreting blueprints to determine the layout of mechanical systems
  • Compute estimates and actual costs of factors, such as materials, labor, and outside contractors, and process work orders assigned to the respective zone
  • Monitor work levels of subordinates, assist employees to correct job skill deficiencies, and keep records of projects, materials used, and equipment, tools, and labor requirements
  • Requisition materials and supplies, check the status of work in progress, and make inspections of completed work for compliance with applicable specifications and codes
  • Assist in the performing of skilled trade duties and training of apprentice tradesmen, and coordinate respective activities with other zones working on renovation and construction projects
  • Work alone and alongside all members of the zone, ensuring all work assigned to the zone is completed in a timely and efficient manner

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of policy and procedures, laws, and regulations relating to one or more of the skilled trades, as well as licensure and certification required for one or more of the skilled trades. They will also have knowledge of the methods, practices, and safety precautions in one or more of the skilled trades, and the standard practices, processes, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will have completion of required education or training along with the required license or certification in the following skilled trades: Journeyman Electrician, Journeyman Plumber, and HVAC Mechanics. They will also possess a valid Driver's License and have other job-related education and/or experience that may be substituted for all or part of the basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements.
