Data Preservation Specialist

Montana Tech is seeking a skilled professional to join our team as a Data Preservation Technician, providing exceptional organizational skills and knowledge of archival principles and practices. The ideal candidate will possess strong filing experience, familiarity with topographic maps and online geospatial resources, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
Salary and Benefits
The successful candidate can expect a competitive salary of $43,500 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan with employer contribution, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program. Additionally, the university offers generous sick leave policy, employee assistance program, and optional retirement plan for eligible employees.
Job Responsibilities
The Data Preservation Technician will be responsible for evaluating and organizing complex historical mining- and geology-related information, implementing methods to stabilize, digitize, digitally restore, and file this information. The technician will also assign documents to student employees for digitization and confirm that the data are complete and accurately digitized. Furthermore, the technician will develop accurate metadata records for newly acquired information and conduct quality assurance reviews to ensure that information is accurate and appropriately cataloged in the hard copy and digital filing systems.
Required Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, applicants must possess an associates degree or higher, at least two years of experience working in an office environment, and knowledge of general office and administrative procedures. The ideal candidate should also have strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat, excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to work effectively in a team environment. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, archival metadata standards, and experience handling delicate archival material are highly preferred.
Work Environment
The work schedule is standard 40-hour week in office, and the successful candidate will be required to stand for several hours a day and lift up to 50 pounds.
