Duties
Within Specialty area, assumes responsibility for the diagnosis, prevention, therapeutic treatment of geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric and/or infant patients and their families.
Examines and diagnoses the health related conditions of individuals requesting care, refers individuals for consultation when appropriate, prescribes and carries out, or directs others in carrying out, appropriate therapy in conformance with approved clinical privileges.
Educates individuals in the nature of health related conditions, recommended, and in the general promotion of health and the prevention of disease. Records patient-provider transactions in the problem oriented medical record format and completes required data collection instruments, referrals, and medical records as required.
Assists in the provision of continuing education, on-the-job training, and orientation of Indian Health Service and Tribal staff as requested.
Assists in the provision of technical assistance to Tribal and community groups as requested.
Routine duties shall include providing medical care and public health services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS in homes, schools, clinics, job sites, and other community locations within the service unit.
Physician's job necessitates providing appropriate, timely assistance and instruction, and advising other Physicians or other health care professionals on patient care safety, recommended diagnostic testing and medical care decision making and treatment.
Works constructively and collaboratively with other health care professionals in attaining high standards of health care in compliance with IHS regulations and directives.
Develops effective relationships with patients, maintaining cultural sensitivity when treating or assisting in patient care, or discussing any complaints from patients relating to treatment and standards of care.

Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link).A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association(external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link).A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.
